This week as America heads to the polls, and celebrates our nation’s veterans, HuntScanion wrote an informative article highlighting the struggles post-9/11 veterans have finding a job where they are valued and able to use their skill set from their time in service.

According to an iCIMs report, ‘America’s Heroes at Work: The Veteran Hiring Report,’ 86% of post-9/11 veterans spend time each week looking for a new job. The main reasons: disappointment with their salary or benefits offered; believing they didn’t have enough education or training to do the job; and reading negative reviews about the company’s culture or work environment, topped the list. Additionally, a significant number of post-9/11 veterans believe their hiring managers do not understand or do not value their military experience. Some even go as far to underplay their military experience as they think it is perceived negatively in the eyes of their employers.

A recent employer survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) found that leadership, strong work ethic, problem-solving skills, and ability to work in a team were among the top six skills employers seek on a candidate’s resume; all things that veterans pride themselves on. HuntScanion recommends employers tap into this skill set, ask for feedback from their veterans to help them feel fulfilled at work and better their veteran hiring program. HuntScanion concluded their article with three tips for employers to better recruit and retain veterans: Monitor and Adjust Sourcing Strategies; Encourage Employee Referrals; and Promote Your Employment Brand.
